There is SO MUCH information in the online space and I know it’s SO EASY to get overwhelmed or to feel like you don’t quite measure up. I have definitely fallen victim to a negative mindset, but I’m learning the more good stuff I put in my brain, the less likely the negative mindset will take over. That’s a win in my book.
I think we need to address the elephant in the room here before we go any further.
Just because you work on your mindset, follow really inspiring people or read amazing books, DOES NOT mean you won’t ever have negative thoughts. That just isn’t realistic. You’re human and you WILL have things like jealousy, fear, and doubt creep up.
You will feel like someone else is prettier than you, has a better following than you, or has better house/wardrobe/bank account than you. You’ll worry that your life doesn’t mean anything, that you can’t help anyone, that you’re wasting your time.
Your brain is designed to keep you safe. When you do new things or step outside your comfort zone, you might as well be walking in front of a bus full of hungry lions. You brain will come up with whatever is necessary to get you to step back onto the curb and walk away from that bus.
The key here is that you learn to recognize those voices are NOT the truth and give your brain all kinds of good stuff it can use to counter negative thoughts.
Two of my favorite ways to flood my brain with all kinds of good mindset juju are listening to podcasts and reading books (the non-fiction, personal development kind). I’ve put together a list of my favorite books and some amazing podcasts in case you’re looking for a little jolt of positivity in your life. I love women who are up to big things in the world and Lindsey definitely is! Not only does she make you want to be best friends with her because she’s super positive and fun, but she also really stretches HOW you think about things. Soul CEO is not a fluff podcast, but rather Lindsey gives actionable tips that you can apply in your life (or business) right away. She challenges you to dig deeper and to do the work so you can live your best life. I always feel more positive and inspired after listening!
I cannot tell you how much Brooke has affected my life. I read her book Self Coaching 101 and it truly opened my eyes to all the negative mind drama that was actually going on in my head. I had no idea that the things I believed were affecting my feeling, actions and the results I was getting my life. Seeing the breakdown of the CTFAR method and reading about how to apply it to my own life experiences was such a gift. I LOVE to listen to the LCS podcast because, just like Soul CEO, it’s always filled with actionable content that challenges me to see things a different way. Such an incredible catalyst for growth!
I mean, if you haven’t heard of Rachel Hollis yet, are you even living in 2019?? Kidding. Sort of. Rachel is one of those people who just know how to help you realize you’re not living up to your potential, but in a way that doesn’t make you feel like crap. She will remind you that you are capable of more and then inspire you to go after it. I’ve heard her say many times that her work is to give people the tools to change their life – and that’s exactly what she does. She’s funny, relatable and inspiring. If you’re not already following her, get some Rach in your life!
I LOVE to listen to this podcast because Jamie has such incredible guests on! It’s so fun to hear the thoughts and experiences of other women because it really helps to make your own life seem more normal. We often look at other people as if they have something we don’t, but the truth is we are all the same – we have fears, worries, fun times, not so fun times, challenges and things to celebrate. In a world where we are often divided based on our differences, Jamie’s podcast is a great reminder that we are all doing the best we can in our lives and we’re so much more alike than we are different. That is a reminder I think we could all use!
And that brings me to my must-read book list:

I’ve read this book at least 3 times and I’m seriously considering reading it another time. It is such a unique book and every time I feel so strongly about showing up in the world and really living out the dreams that God has put in my heart. This book is equal parts cheerleader and powerful manifesto. Brendon is an incredible writer who really shares a glimpse into his soul with this book. If you only read one book from this list, let this be it.
I wasn’t as excited to read this book originally and I think I was having some resistance around it because I knew it was going to challenge some of the negative beliefs I was holding onto. I first heard about this book while I was watching Elizabeth Rider’s TEDx talk and I immediately ordered it based on her mention of it. When I finally picked it up to read it, I was surprised to find it was an easier read than I was expecting and I was able to really hone in on my own fears that has been holding me back. Seriously, it’s well worth the time!
I read this one several years ago, but it’s really stuck with me! Gretchen was by all accounts a successful woman, but she didn’t feel like her life was filled with the sort of joy or happiness that she wanted. So she took on a the task of trying different things over the course of a year to try to make herself happy. This is such an easy read, but there are so many good takeaways. You can’t go wrong filling your mind with stories about a woman who figured out that happiness doesn’t look anything like the perfection lies we’ve been sold, but it’s pretty great anyways.
